Golden Hour Family Mini Session at Noerenberg Memorial Gardens in Wayzata

There are some families that simply radiate joy, and the Nordeen family is definitely one of them.

We met for a summer mini session at the beautiful Noerenberg Memorial Gardens in Wayzata, where the gardens were in full bloom and golden hour gave us the dreamiest light. Their girls were full of energy, curiosity, and the sweetest free spirits. Rather than asking them to stand perfectly still, we spent our time exploring the gardens, laughing together, and letting them simply be kids.

Those are always the moments that make my favorite photographs.

Why Golden Hour is Perfect for Family Photos

Golden hour is one of my favorite times to photograph families. The warm evening sunlight creates a soft, glowing backdrop that feels timeless and natural.

Combined with the colorful flowers and winding paths at Noerenberg Memorial Gardens, it made the perfect setting to capture this sweet season of life for the Nordeen family.

Some of the best moments weren’t posed at all—they happened as the girls twirled through the gardens, held their parents’ hands, and giggled their way from one spot to the next.

Summer is One of the Best Times for Family Photos

One of the reasons I love photographing families during the summer is that life often feels a little more relaxed.

Without early school mornings or daycare schedules to race through, evenings tend to be slower. Kids are usually happier staying up just a little later for that beautiful golden light, and families have the chance to enjoy the experience instead of squeezing it into an already busy school week.

Family sessions don’t have to feel stressful. They can feel like an evening adventure together—and that’s exactly what the Nordine family’s session was.

Capturing the Joy of Right Now

Children change so much from year to year, and every stage brings something worth remembering. Whether it’s the gap-toothed smiles, the endless giggles, the hand-holding, or the way they still reach for mom and dad, these are the moments you’ll be so thankful you preserved.

The Nordine family reminded me that the best family photos don’t come from perfect poses they come from genuine connection, playful personalities, and simply enjoying time together.

Still Thinking About Family Photos This Year?

If your family is still hoping to update your photos this summer, I’d love to help you capture this season before it slips away.

I have one final summer mini session available, and if that date doesn’t fit your schedule, there are plenty of family session openings throughout September.

Whether your kids are adventurous, silly, shy, or complete free spirits like the Nordine girls, my goal is to create a session where everyone can relax, have fun, and simply enjoy being together.

I photograph families throughout Wayzata, Plymouth, Minnetonka, Maple Grove, St. Michael, and the northwest Twin Cities, and I’d love to connect with your family next. Let’s chase the golden light, explore together, and create photographs that you’ll treasure for years to come.

Summer Family Mini Session in Wayzata, MN :: The Bailey Family

There is something so special about documenting families year after year. Watching children grow, personalities blossom, and families create new memories is one of my favorite parts of being a family photographer.

This summer, I met the Bailey family at one of my favorite garden locations in Wayzata, Minnesota, for a family mini session. With blooming flowers, beautiful greenery, and plenty of room for little ones to explore, it was the perfect setting for capturing this season of their lives.

A Beautiful Garden Setting in Wayzata

The gardens in downtown Wayzata are one of my favorite locations for summer family photography. They offer colorful flowers, lush greenery, charming pathways, and nearby open spaces that are perfect for young children to move and play naturally.

It’s a location that photographs beautifully while still feeling relaxed and fun for families.

Why Summer Mini Sessions Are Perfect for Young Families

If you have toddlers or young children, a mini session can be the perfect fit.

Young kids often have shorter attention spans, and that’s okay! Mini sessions are designed to move quickly while still allowing plenty of opportunities for genuine smiles, playful moments, and the sweet interactions that make your family unique.

Instead of expecting children to pose for an hour, we spend our time playing, exploring, laughing, and letting their personalities shine. Those authentic moments are often the ones parents treasure most.

    Documenting Every Stage

One thing I’ve learned over the years is just how quickly children change.

One year they’re taking their first steps, the next they’re running through flower gardens, telling stories, and showing off their big personalities. These stages pass so much faster than we expect.

That’s why so many of my clients choose to schedule family photos every year—or even twice a year. Rather than waiting several years between sessions, they love creating a collection of memories that tells the story of their family’s journey.

When I look back at families like the Baileys, it’s amazing to see how much changes from one session to the next.

Ready to Update Your Family Photos?

Whether you’re planning ahead for holiday cards, updating the artwork on your walls, or simply wanting to preserve this stage of life before it slips away, a summer family session is the perfect opportunity.

I photograph families throughout Wayzata, Plymouth, Minnetonka, St. Michael, Maple Grove, and the surrounding Twin Cities area, creating relaxed sessions that focus on genuine connection and real moments.

If you’ve been thinking about updating your family photos this year, I’d love to connect and help tell your family’s story. These years go by quickly, and there’s no better time than now to capture the little moments you’ll treasure for years to come. Reach out here to book your session.

Halsch Family Extended Family Session at Burwell House in Minnetonka :: Twin Cities Family Photographer

There is something incredibly special about gathering multiple generations together to celebrate a milestone, and the Halsch family did just that during their recent extended family photography session at the beautiful Burwell House in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

With family traveling from Iowa, Minnesota, and Colorado, this session was about so much more than taking photos it was about celebrating a legacy. The occasion? A very special 50th wedding anniversary for the family patriarch and matriarch. After five decades of marriage, love, commitment, and family, there was no better way to honor this milestone than by documenting everyone together.

The weather could not have been more perfect. The historic grounds of Burwell House provided a beautiful backdrop for family portraits, individual family groupings, grandparent photos, sibling photos, and plenty of candid moments that showcased the joy of simply being together.

One of my favorite things about extended family sessions is capturing the connections between generations. From grandparents with their grandchildren to adult siblings laughing together, these are the images that become treasured family heirlooms for years to come.

After their portrait session, the celebration continued with a surprise boat cruise on Lake Minnetonka. The family enjoyed an evening on the water filled with dinner, laughter, stories, and quality time together a perfect way to honor fifty years of marriage and family memories.

As a Minneapolis and Twin Cities family photographer, it is always an honor to be invited into these meaningful moments. Whether you’re celebrating a milestone anniversary, family reunion, retirement, birthday, or simply have loved ones gathering from across the country, professional photographs are one of the best ways to preserve the memories.

The Twin Cities offers so many wonderful locations for extended family photography including Minnetonka, Wayzata, Maple Grove, Plymouth, Excelsior, Minneapolis, St. Paul, and the many beautiful parks and lakes throughout the metro area. Burwell House remains one of my favorite locations thanks to its historic charm, mature trees, and beautiful outdoor spaces.

A heartfelt thank you to the Halsch family for allowing me to be a small part of such a special celebration. It was truly a joy to meet your family and document this incredible milestone.

My 4 Favorite Family Photo Locations in Minnesota (By Season)

Choosing the right location for your family session can completely shape the look and feel of your photos. Living and photographing in Minnesota means we get the beauty of all four seasons and each one brings its own magic.

If you’re planning a 2026 family session, here are my four favorite locations, one for each season, that consistently deliver stunning, meaningful images.

        Spring:: Lake Harriet Rose Garden

Spring in Minnesota is something special, and there’s no better place to capture it than the Lake Harriet Rose Garden in Minneapolis.

        This location comes alive with:

        • Apple blossoms and crabapple tree blooms
        • Tulips and lilacs
        • Lush greenery and vibrant florals

Not only does it look beautiful, but it smells incredible too—which makes your session feel like a full sensory experience. The variety of textures and colors creates soft, romantic backdrops that are perfect for families with young kids or anyone wanting that fresh, light-filled spring look.

If you’re searching for spring family photos in Minneapolis or flower-filled photo locations in Minnesota, this is one of the best spots.

Summer: Wayzata (Downtown Wayzata & Lake Minnetonka)

Summer sessions in downtown Wayzata are everything you want Minnesota to feel like.

Right along Lake Minnetonka, this location offers so much variety in one session:

        • Sandy beach vibes
        • Boardwalk and marina views
        • Green spaces and flowers
        • Charming downtown textures

It’s perfect for families who want a relaxed, playful session that captures real moments; kids running barefoot, parents soaking in the sunshine, and that golden summer glow.

If you’re looking for Lake Minnetonka family photos or a Minnesota summer beach session, Wayzata is always a favorite.

Fall: Golden Fields at Otsego Park & Elm Creek Park Reserve

Fall is hands-down one of the most popular times for family photos—and for good reason.

My go-to locations are grassy fields like:

        These spots offer:

        • Tall golden grasses
        • Warm, glowing sunsets
        • Open space for kids to run and play

From September through even early November, the light hits just right creating that dreamy golden-hour glow Minnesota is known for.

If you’ve been searching for fall family photos near Maple Grove or golden field photo locations in Minnesota, these are two of the best.

        Winter: Rice Park

Winter sessions can feel intimidating, but Rice Park in downtown St. Paul makes them magical.

        Surrounded by:

You get a mix of historic architecture and cozy winter charm.

From December through March, the park is filled with twinkling lights, creating a beautiful backdrop whether:

        • Fresh snow is falling
        • The ground is lightly covered
        • Or even during those in-between melt days

The sun reflects off the buildings in the most stunning way, and there’s even the option to step inside the Landmark Center (with a photo pass) for added variety.

If you’re considering winter family photos in St. Paul or a downtown Minnesota holiday session, this location is hard to beat.

The Miller Family :: Lowry Nature Center, Victoria, MN

Why Summer Is the Most Underrated Time for Family Photos

This past summer, I had the pleasure of photographing the Miller family at Lowry Nature Center in Victoria, MN. With two busy teens and two energetic school-aged boys, the family was juggling sports, homework, and summer activities, but we still captured a session full of laughter, connection, and genuine summer vibes.

Summer often gets overlooked when it comes to family photos, but after this session, it’s easy to see why it’s actually the perfect time for families, especially those with teens.

Longer Days = More Flexibility (and Happier Kids)

With summer’s extended daylight, we had the freedom to schedule the session during golden hour,t he magical hour just before sunset when the light is soft, warm, and perfect for photos.

Even with teens who sometimes resist having their picture taken, the Miller kids were relaxed and playful because they weren’t rushed. The extended day meant we could explore different areas of the nature center without feeling the pressure of early bedtimes or school schedules.

Lush Greens & Glowy Light You Can’t Get Any Other Time of Year

Lowry Nature Center was bursting with greenery and summer blooms, creating a natural, vibrant backdrop for the Miller family. From winding trails to open fields, every shot felt alive and colorful.

Summer light brings out textures and tones that just can’t be replicated in other seasons making even candid moments like teens joking with each other or little ones running ahead of the group feel cinematic and timeless.

Slower Schedules Mean More Genuine Connection

Summer provides a slower rhythm, even for busy families. The Miller family’s teens, usually balancing sports and summer jobs, had space to engage naturally with their younger siblings. The school-aged boys, who are normally full of energy, could run, explore, and play freely without being hurried.

This slower pace allowed for authentic moments the kind of photos that make parents pause, smile, and feel like they’ve captured a season of life rather than just a snapshot in time.

Teens Shine When They Feel Free

Teens often struggle with posed photos, but summer sessions feel effortless. The Miller teens relaxed into the open spaces, giving me natural smiles and interactions that felt completely genuine. The freedom to wander the trails, sit under trees, or playfully interact with their younger brothers created images that truly reflect their personalities.

          Memories That Will Last

Family photos aren’t just about pretty pictures they’re about capturing the essence of your family right now. Summer sessions, like the Miller family’s at Lowry Nature Center, provide the light, space, and relaxed energy to create images that parents and kids will treasure for years.

Whether you have busy teens or energetic younger kids, summer offers a window to capture authentic, joyful moments before life moves into the next season.

If you’re thinking about scheduling your own summer session in the Twin Cities area, don’t overlook this magical season, it might just be the perfect time for your family photos.
